The 3-Step Process to Reset Your Mindset Anytime

Limiting beliefs can be a real pain in the “progress” muscle, am I right?

You get so excited about a dream that you actually let yourself make a plan. You might have even dared to take an action or two.

But then, from deep within the confines of your mind, a voice echoes, “What are you even doing? Who cares what you have to say? What makes you think you’re capable of doing this?”

And your throat starts to close, and your heart starts to race, and all you want to do at that point is hide under the covers forever.

We’ve all been there.

Being the Queen of Starting Fresh, myself, I know a thing or two about limiting beliefs. In fact, I wrote the book on it – The Ego Death Experience is currently being revised for a second edition!

That said, my 8-Step Ego Death Process can be an …emotional experience, to say the least. It’s not something that can, or should, be done in a few minutes, in the moment.

So when I was reading Gabby Bernstein’s newest title, Super Attractor, I noticed a 3-Step Process in her first chapter that was kind of an abbreviated version of my Ego Death Process – and I just had to share this “shortcut” with you.


It’s important to understand what limiting beliefs are in the first place.

Limiting beliefs are the product of a psychological reaction to introducing something new.

Your unconscious mind is designed to do whatever it takes to keep you safe. When you choose to do something you’ve never done before, your unconscious mind will have a momentary freak-out because it doesn’t know the rules it takes to stay safe in this new situation.

So even if it doesn’t make sense on the surface, your unconscious mind is taking steps to keep you within the parameters of your current situation. Even if your current situation isn’t comfortable, even if it isn’t what you really want to be doing, even if it’s obviously not living your best life.

Knowing that limiting beliefs are an unconscious reaction, you should realize they’re no more under your control than your heart beating is under your control.

Attacking yourself for having limiting thoughts isn’t going to make them go away, and it isn’t going to help you learn to cope with them any easier. It’s natural to experience limiting thoughts or beliefs sometimes. Even for people that you perceive to be wildly successful.

The difference between what happens when a successful person has a negative self-thought vs. when anyone else does is that the successful person doesn’t make the thought mean anything.

That’s where NLP comes in.

The fastest way to start using NLP in your everyday life is to become an observer of your thoughts, rather than identifying with them. This allows you to examine your thoughts and to ask yourself where they come from, and what other factors may be involved in the way your mind is perceiving the information that’s resulting in those thought patterns.

In Super Attractor, Gabby describes a 3-step process for when you find yourself in anxious, negative thought patterns and want to shift the energy.

1. Notice the thought.

Catch your limiting beliefs in the moment, instead of allowing yourself to spiral into them. Just examine the thought. Where did it come from? Where did you see/learn something like this the first time?

2. Forgive the thought.

Forgive yourself for having the thought. Again, limiting beliefs are an unconscious reaction to doing new things, so instead of beating yourself up for “being negative,” simply give your inner self a big hug. It’s all happening out of love for your well being, ultimately.

3. Write a new thought.

After acknowledging and releasing the thought through observation and unconditional self-love, you get to choose something better to believe instead! For as much energy as you give to your imagination, letting yourself run wild with how terrible things could go, use this opportunity to do the reverse and really sink into the daydream of “what if everything works perfectly for me, though?”

Before you know it, you’ll be in a totally new frame of mind, and you’ll feel much more confident to take that next step.
